The 2020 World Watch List (WWL), the latest annual accounting from Open Doors of the top 50 countries where Christians are the most persecuted for their faith.
The listed nations comprise 260 million Christians suffering high to severe levels of persecution, up from 245 million in last year’s list.
Here are the countries where its hard to follow christ.
North Korea, Somalia and Afghanistan are the worst countries to openly follow the teachings of the Bible, according to the study by Open Doors. North Korea has been branded the most dangerous country in the world for Christians since 2002.
Other countries on the lists are
Libya
Pakistan
Eritrea
Sudan
Yemen
Iran
India
A staggering 260 million Christians in the top 50 countries on the World Watch List face high or extreme levels of persecution for their faith: in the previous year, it was 245 million. Open Doors media estimates that there are another 50 million Christians facing high levels of persecution in a further 23 countries outside the top 50. This includes Mexico, Chad and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Another 50 million could be added from the 23 nations that fall just outside the top 50—such as Mexico, Chad, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo—for a ratio of 1 in 8 Christians worldwide facing persecution.
Last year, 40 nations scored high enough to register “very high” persecution levels. This year, it reached 45.
North Korea was ranked No. 1 since 2002, when the watch list began.
Since 2002, North Korea (1) has been the most difficult place to follow Jesus. But terrible though it is, it’s not an outlier. Afghanistan (2) and Somalia (3)are close behind in the Open Doors analysis of persecution risk.
In 2019, 2,983 Christians were killed for their faith. That figure is shocking and upsetting, but it is fewer than the number of believers reported killed in 2018 (4,305) or 2017 (3,066). This is largely due to fewer murders in Nigeria (12), which remains far and away the country where Christians are most likely to be killed for their faith.
As christians we will not be afraid because the bible says Matthew 5:10
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Romans 8:35
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?
We are armies for christ and we will not be shaken, as we await the bridegroom, let us have faith that Jesus will never fails us.
